PETRONAS GEO BLG is on Jenbacher’s list of approved lubricants. A trial with PETRONAS GEO BLG was initiated for Engine 1 after an extensive maintenance was performed at 4,100 hours. The trial concluded after 1,200 hours and soon after, Engine 2 and Engine 3 ran on PETRONAS GEO BLG, yielding comparable results. PETRONAS also conducted oil analyses every 250 hours for engine protection and to set accurate drain intervals.
Result

The customer, a private power station owner and operator in Indonesia, is a leading specialist in distributed power generation, utilizing high-speed gas engines in its gas-fired power stations.
Challenge
The company faced a significant oxidation challenge with the lubricants supplied for its MTU 16V4000L32F gas engine units. The lubricants not only surpassed the acceptable oxidation level but also exceeded the recommended viscosity threshold. Additionally, they barely met the minimum Total Base Number (TBN) requirement, raising concerns about the engines' capacity to neutralize acidic by products.
PETRONAS Expert Solution
The company partnered with PETRONAS for a 1,300-hour dual-engine trial using PETRONAS GEO NG. Periodic oil sampling and analyses were conducted, monitoring kinematic viscosity, TBN and Total Acid Number (TAN), iron and copper content along with oxidation and nitration via Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis. The caution limits were established according to SOS Trakindo Lab and MTU OEM standards.
Result
The switch to PETRONAS GEO NG yielded excellent performance, maintaining all critical parameters within the specified limits throughout the trial. The oil analysis indicated that the kinematic viscosity remained within the acceptable limit, with a TBN value consistently above 3.0 mgKOH/gram. Oxidation levels were stable at around 20-21, and both iron and copper concentrations were within the acceptable range throughout 1,300 hours of operation. PETRONAS GEO NG also had the potential to operate for up to 1,500 hours oil drain interval (ODI).

Customer
The customer specializes in urban waste, industrial waste, sanitation and energy recovery. It operates three power generation plants fueled by landfill gas in Brazil with a total of more than 50 engines.
Challenge
The primary challenges the company faced stemmed from impurities in the landfill gas, which compromised oil longevity and shortened oil drain intervals (ODI). Specifically, hydrogen sulphide impacted the Total Base Number (TBN), Total Acid Number (TAN), oxidation, and viscosity, while siloxane deposits were highly abrasive, accelerating wear on engine components. As such, the customer required the oil to maintain its properties and performance within the OEM-defined parameters. For instance, the TBN was not to decrease by more than 50% of its initial value over 1,200 hours of operation.
PETRONAS Expert Solution
The company agreed to a 900-hour trial, during which PETRONAS GEO BLG was selected to initiate a field trial on two engines. One engine (GMG 09) ran on our lubricant, while the other (GMG 13) operated with a competitor's product. The trial included assessments of lubricant quality, vibration, and thermographic analysis, along with monitoring of the engines' operational data to gauge productivity.
Result
The PETRONAS GEO BLG product outperformed its competitor as evidenced by the following: (i) 8.28% better TBN retention in the same engine; (ii) 5.40% lower lubricant consumption in the same engine; (iii) maintained more stable lubricant viscosity; (iv) achieved a 3% improved Viscosity Index and (v) demonstrated a lower TAN.
